What I Wore: Le Carnaval des Couleurs

April 08, 2014

I've been so excited to write this post since the weekend! I mentioned earlier this year that I had got the College Ambassadorship position I applied for. This ambassadorship was for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. I, along with all of the other amazing ambassadors/directors/museum staff, work to put on one big event a semester. This semester we decided to host a college night event centered around the Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism, which the museum had just received very recently.

Our theme was obvious from the get-go. We decided we wanted something crazily colorful and we wanted the event to have a Parisian bohemian sort of feel. We instructed everyone to let their free spirit wander and to come dressed in the best "bright tie attire."

To say that event was a success would be a huge understatement! Our Le Carnaval des Couleurs was filled to the brim with amazing activity and art. We had a local band Wino Vino play on the south lawn accompanied by fire dancers and a juggler. We had a mime that interacted all night with the guests. We had live models being painted in a nearby space. We had an incredible DJ accompanied by belly dancers and surrealist video in the background. We had a photobooth and a place where fellow ambassadors were drawing caricatures of guests which was a huge success. We had a station where guests could DIY paper flowers. We had a scavenger hunt involving ambassadors dressed up like figures from some of the paintings in the collection. We had an intimate boho sheet fort that hosted local slam poet Houston Hughes who performed period-poetry pieces accompanied by a cellist (this was my favorite!) while guests curled up on the floor among tons of pillows and rugs. We had a bar and a snack table that served a healthy spread of french bread, cheese, and fruit.

I was so amazed to see how many people came out to this event. Last I heard there was around 700 people who had come out to support us. Best of all, there were so many college aged students that came out (which is great for a Saturday night). Everyone had an amazing time as far as I could tell! All of my friends that came said that it was a really fun event and would love to come to another. Nothing could've made me happier to hear!

Though I was focused on helping out for a majority of the evening (hence the lack of photos from the actual event), I still got to enjoy all we had to offer as if I were a guest. It was such a rewarding, amazing experience to work so hard and collaborate with so many other creative people and have this event come to life in such a successful way!

Plus, dressing for this event was so amazingly fun! I've been crushing so hard on orange this spring and this perfect dress found me at just the right time (and worked so well with the heels I already owned).
